“What They Can’t Prepare You For” (A Soldier’s Song) - Original by JuJu Dunlap
As bullets hit the side of his door
He sees flashes of what hes fighting for
four months along
he knows shes trying to stay strong
but seven months is a long time to feel alone
and they prepare you for just about everything
before they hand you orders and send you out to sea
they give you a switch to turn off what you feel
to do your job, and prepare for the kill
but when an envelope came with pictures of his baby at forty weeks
tears washed a troop away and brought a daddy to his knees
He hears rounds and I.E.Ds
but his minds back home in a hospital seat
doesnt matter, boy or girl
cause he’ll meet the face that changes his world
three hours of sleep at night
he spends thinking about that homebound flight
and little hands that fit in his palm
how could he create something so precious and small
and they prepare you for just about everything
before they hand you orders and ship you out to sea
but no amount of training with a truck or a gun
gave him the strength to stay on his feet
the moment he meets his son
